1909-1910 E97 C. A. Briggs Co. Complete Set (30)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $17,625.00

Rarely seen complete set of E97 C. A. Briggs Co., entirely graded by SGC. This is first complete set of E97s we have offered in thirty years. This 30-card set was issued in 1909-1910 by the C. A. Briggs Co., Lozenge Makers of Boston, Mass. This set is closely related to several other candy sets from the era, which share the same format, and, in many cases, the same player image. The cards are very similar in design to their E93 counterparts and can most easily be distinguished by the attractive brown-printed checklist of the complete set and the advertisement for "C. A. Briggs Co., Lozenge Makers, Boston, Mass." along the bottom on the reverse of each card. As is the case with most 1910-era tobacco and “E” card issues, E97 C.A. Briggs Company cards each measure approximately 1.5 x 2.75 inches. The set does not include the Young and Sullivan Boston-team variation cards. Twenty-one cards range in grade from Gd to Ex, and nine cards lesser. We have sent all thirty cards from the set to be graded and encapsulated by SGC: Three EX 60: Birmingham, Devore, and Murray. Seven VG/EX 50: Durham, Dygert, Keeler (HOF), Moore, Mullin, Schlei, and Sullivan (Chicago). Six VG 40: Austin, Carrigan (Toy Town ink stamp on back), Davis, Heinchman, McIntyre, and Nichols (Nicholls, Cleveland). Five GOOD 30: Bradley, Bransfield, Doolan, Hartsell, and Rossman. Four FAIR 20: Kelly (HOF), McConnell, Meyers, and Young (Cleveland). Four POOR 10: Hemphill, Kleinow, Kroh, and Steinfeld. One Auth: Camnitz. This set is in exceptionally fine condition, especially for caramel cards, which because they were issued with candy, one card per package, they did not easily escape damage or hold up well to wear over the years. This is a magnificent and very rarely offered complete set of E97 Briggs Co., one of the most popular, elusive, and colorful of all “E” card issues. Total 30 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $17,625.00
