1910 E125 American Caramel Die-cut Fred Clark (Clarke)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $8,225.00

Presented is an extraordinary example of Hall of Famer Fred Clarke from the 1910 E125 American Caramel Die-cut series. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only E125 of Fred Clarke known to exist. Its existence has always been suggested by the E125 Pirates' checklist, which appears on the reverse of all E125 Pittsburg Pirates players, but this is the only example of Fred Clarke that has ever been confirmed to exist to the best of our knowledge. This is the first time that this card has ever been illustrated in print. Perhaps someday other examples will surface, but for now, and maybe forever, this is the only E125 Clarke known to exist. The fragile nature of all die-cut cards and the easily broken flaps at the base of E125s which allow them to stand, make complete, high-grade examples all the rarer. The E125 Fred Clarke has survived complete, with all flaps intact, with stand-up flaps never even having been folded back. Bright and clean, both front and back, the card presents at a glance as Ex-Mt, though very close examination reveals a very tiny surface crease on his glove. The card has some areas of light age toning and an extremely minor surface flake at the edge by Clarke's left leg. The reverse is bright and perfectly clean. Graded by SGC VG 40. We grade this card considerably stronger, at Vg-Ex/Ex condition. This card would be magnificent simply as a high-grade E125 example, but as the hobby’s only known E125 American Caramel Die-cut of Hall of Famer Fred Clarke it is extraordinary. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $8,225.00
