1911 T4 Obak Premium Cabinet Carson of Vernon, PCL

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,645.00

Extremely rare T4 Obak Premium card of Vernon pitcher Alex Carson. This is an extremely rare sample card. The large-format Obaks premium cards (5 x 7 inches) were available only by mail in exchange for coupons, which were distributed one per pack with Obak Cigarettes. Fifty Obak coupons were required to obtain each premium. In light of this, it is not surprising that they are so rare. The premiums feature Pacific Coast League players in the very same poses as appear in the traditional small-format T212 Obak insert cards, but larger in size and in striking black-and-white photographic images as opposed to color. It is fascinating to note that while the design of Obak premiums do not include player identifications, they almost always have a number in pencil written in the upper left corner of the reverse. This number corresponds to the player checklist on the Obak coupon, and was added by Obak to help with organization of the premiums as they filled orders. This example is graded POOR 10 by SGC due to a large pinhole at the top, and a small pinhole that is flush with the bottom border (giving the appearance of a tiny border nick). This cabinet card was obviously tacked up on a wall in 1911, as intended, not unlike many surviving T3 Turkey Red premium cards which were similarly redeemed by mail in exchange for coupons. Aside from the tack holes and some pencil markings on the reverse (including the number "98" in the upper left), the card is in Very Good condition, with just a little corner wear and a crease in the lower left corner. The front is very clean and the image has flawless contrast. This is a impressive-looking sample card from one of the Pacific Coast League's rarest sets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
