1888-1913 Tobacco Card Collection (75)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $9,400.00

"Shoebox" collection of seventy-five tobacco cards spans the years 1888 to the 1910 era and includes cards from four different classic sets: two 1888 N172 Old Judges, eleven 1888 N135 Duke "Talk of the Diamond" cards, sixty-one 1911 T205 Gold Borders, and one 1913 T200 Fatima Team card. This is an an unusual collection which is loaded with highlights. 1) Two 1888 N172 Old Judges: Dummy Hoy - throwing pose (well centered with superb image quality and even wear to the corners. Pencil writing on the back, but otherwise in Vg-Ex condition) and Shreve (bright and crisp with extraordinary photo quality. Vg-Ex/Ex condition). 2) 1888 N135 Duke "Talk of the Diamond" (11 of 25 cards in the set): Nine cards are Ex, one Vg, and one slightly lesser. This exceptionally colorful set was issued with Duke's Honest Long Cut tobacco brand, which was called "Talk of the Diamond." Each card features a baseball-related caption with a comic scene to the right, and a baseball player illustration to the left. This set is very closely related to N284 Buchner. Fourteen of the twenty-five player poses on these cards are actually identical to those found in the N284 Buchner set. The baseball players pictured are not identified. This very scarce issue is highly prized by both nineteenth-century baseball and non-sport tobacco-card collectors. 3) Sixty-one 1911 T205 Gold Borders: We selected the following seven cards (all HOFers) to be graded by PSA: Baker (PSA EX 5), Bender (PSA EX 5), Chance (PSA EX 5), Evers (PSA EX 5), Mathewson (PSA VG-EX 4, displays much better than the assigned grade, no creases and perfect registration), Tinker (PSA EX 5), and Young (PSA EX 5). Also includes three additional HOFers: McGraw (Vg), Wallace - cap (Vg-Ex), and Wallace - one-line 1910 variation (Fr). The balance of the cards grade 55% Ex, 35% Vg-Ex, and 10% Vg. 4) 1913 T200 Fatima Team: Chicago NL (features HOFers Bresnahan and Evers, Gd-Vg condition). This original-owner card collection includes ten Hall of Famers, and offers a significant representation of several of the most important early tobacco-card issues. SMR value for just the seven graded cards (not including the sixty-eight ungraded cards) is $4,100. Total 75 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $9,400.00
