1888 N173 Old Judge Proofs Brooklyn Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,060.00

Collection of five very unusual and rare N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet proof cards, all Brooklyn players, all by New York photographer Otto J. Frank ("S. W. Cor. 125th St., & 3d Ave. New York"). Each card has a dark brown mount with advertising for Otto J. Frank studios in the lower margin of the mount, and blank backs (with each player's name neatly written in pencil on reverse). A sign appears on the ground in each image reading "Copyright 1888 Goodwin & Co." Otto J. Frank studios provided images of Brooklyn players for use by Goodwin in the N172 and N173 Old Judge series. These cabinet photographs were produced as part of this process. These are the first Brooklyn N173 Goodwin cabinet card proofs by Otto J. Frank studios that we have ever seen. It is especially interesting to note that these cabinets originate directly from the family of one of the Brooklyn players. Brooklyn finished second in the American Association (AA) standings in 1888 with an 88-52 record. The five cabinet cards feature the following players: Robert Clark (Ex), Dave Foutz (a little extra wear in the upper right corner, but still Ex), Darby O'Brien (with a couple of light stains mentioned strictly for sake of accuracy, otherwise Ex), Germany Smith (Vg-Ex due to crease in the lower left corner on mount only, otherwise Ex), Robert Caruthers (the weakest of the group in terms of condition, with various condition problems including a light crease, some surface scratching, and staining; could possibly benefit from cleaning). Total 5 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,060.00
