1888 R & S Artistic Series and 1896 N301 Mayo's Diecuts Collection (24)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,972.00

Twenty-four different nineteenth-century generic die-cut baseball cards, from three different series: 1) 1888 R & S Artistic Series Complete Set (10): The uniforms of these colorful scrapbook diecuts represent baseball's major franchise cities of 1885, suggesting that that is the correct date of issue as opposed to 1888 as listed in guides: Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh from the National League, and Baltimore, Brooklyn and St. Louis from the American Association. Little is known about exactly how these diecuts were issued, but it is believed they were produced to be glued into scrapbooks, which was a very popular pastime of the day. 2) 1896 N301 Mayo's Game Cards (4): 1st Base NY, 3rd Base NY, Batman Bos, and Runner Bos. The Mayo's are a particularly interesting issue, because they feature advertising on their reverses, and are a catalogued tobacco card set. While this issue has been overlooked by most collectors in large part because they do not feature likenesses of actual ballplayers, they are very distinctive and as rare or rarer than many other nineteenth-century card issues. 3) Nineteenth-Century Diecuts (10): Ten different generic players (nine players and one manager) in Boston uniforms. Each athlete is pictured in a different pose, either running, batting, fielding or pitching. These were apparently part of a game. They are beautifully cut out as intended and are ideal for display. This is a very impressive collection of rare and very colorful nineteenth-century baseball diecut cards. The R & S diecuts have some scrapbook paper on reverse and are otherwise in Ex condition, with the exception of two which are torn and have been reinforced with tape on their reverses (these two still display well); the N301 Mayo's are Ex; the Nineteenth-Century diecut game cards are Ex. Total 24 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
