1887 N172 Old Judge Cap Anson - Portrait

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $8,700.00

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Extraordinary 1887 N172 Old Judge portrait example of Cap Anson. While this card has been graded only VG/EX 50 by SGC, in our opinion this may be the single finest example of this key nineteenth-century card we have ever seen, including many examples which have graded higher. This card has the appearance of a Nr/Mt or better example. Even more important it has an incredibly bold contrast that is simply rarely seen on any Old Judge card, let alone Cap Anson. As can be easily seen, the portrait image really jumps out on this gem. We believe it would be impossible to find a finer example of this card in terms of photo quality. The top of Anson's portrait usually blends into the background of this card due to the combination of fading natural to Old Judges and the lack of contrast provided by the blank background. On this incredibly bold example, Anson's portrait is so strong it contrasts sharply against the blank background. It just doesn't get any better than this. Bright, clean, and exceptionally crisp, both front and back, and with extraordinary contrast. With a loop, you can even count the dots on Anson's tie. (To put this in perspective, the photo quality on many N172 Ansons is so poor that many collectors don't even realize that Anson's tie has any dots.) The card has been downgraded from a much higher grade by SGC solely due to a very small, perfectly clean area of surface paper loss on the reverse, which one must look closely to even see, measuring approximately 0.5 x 0.75 inches, the result of a small piece of tape or a stamp hinge being removed long ago. It is true that this extremely minor imperfection is there, but if we could choose for one imperfection to occur on an Old Judge card - this is it. Flawlessly centered, with four square corners, and unimprovable clarity. Don't be fooled by the SGC assigned grade on this gem. The card speaks for itself. This is a world-class ultra high-grade example of N172 Cap Anson, one of the nineteenth century's most desirable and classic cards, and a card which would be a significant highlight in any of the world's most advanced collections. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $8,700.00
