1937 Chicago Cubs George Burke Presentation Photos Signed To Lonny Frey (17)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $928.00

Collection of seventeen different 4 x 6-inch black-and-white presentation photographs by famed photographer George Burkes, each depicting a separate member of the 1937 Chicago Cubs, signed by the respective player in either blue or black fountain pen. All of these photos originate directly from the personal collection of former Cubs player Lonny Frey. These were almost certainly originally part of a presentation album featuring photos of the entire team given to each player. Eleven of the photos have been personalized to Frey. Included with the collection is a copy of the cover letter sent by Frey to the consignor in 1976 when Frey mailed him the photos. The players featured here, with their inscriptions (if any) in parenthesis, are as follows: Gabby Hartnett ("To my friend Lonny-A real Dutchman. 'Gabby Hartnett' 'Cubs' 1937"), Billy Herman (To Lonnie, With Best Wishes, Billy Herman"), Walter Higbe, Bill Jurges, Frank Demaree ("To 'Lonnie', With best wishes for success, Frank Demaree"), John Corriden ("To my good friend Lonnie, Sincerely John Corriden"), Clyde Shoun, Rip Collins ("To Lonnie, Best Always, John Rip Collins"), Roy Johnson ("To my buddy, Roy Johnson), Charlie Grimm ("Best always Lon, Charlie Grimm"), Phil Cavarretta ("To 'Lonnie,' A real pal + a swell ballplayer, Phil Cavarretta"), Clay Bryant ("To 'Lonny,' A swell fellow 'Clay' Bryant"), Augie Galan, Jim O'Dea ("To my friend Lonnie with lots of luck, Jim O'Dea"), Joe Marty ("Best wishes to my teammate Lonny from Joe Marty"), Carl Reynolds, and Bill Lee ("Best Wishes, Bill Lee"). The signatures and inscriptions have all been boldly penned, each grading "9" to "10." Each photo appears to have been long ago mounted in an album with photo corners; the outline of the corners (and in some cases surface paper loss in this area) appears in the corners. The top two corners of the Bryant photo have been clipped. The Jurges photo displays an area of red discoloration upon his image, as well as a horizontal crease; otherwise, the photos are in Excellent condition overall. Each photo has been mounted upon a red cardboard backing with black trim in a very attractive manner to total dimension of 5.75 x 7.75 inches. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $928.00
