1924-1926 Autograph and Card Scrapbook Collection with Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, etc.

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $7,540.00

A "boyhood" scrapbook collection including nineteen cut signatures (with twelve Hall of Famers) plus one letter (Chief Bender) assembled from 1924 through 1926 by a young baseball enthusiast. He saved his treasured childhood collection his entire life and the collection has now been consigned in its entirety to this auction directly from his family. The collection also includes a diverse assortment of 122 cards from several different issues (detail below). Each cut signature is mounted on a plain sheet of paper and has been decorated with an image of the player cut from a newspaper. The players were mailed three small slips of paper and were requested to sign their name, the team they played for, and their respective position. The signatures are all period (1924-1926) and range in grade from "7" to "10," overall averaging "9." Includes: Chief Bender, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Joe Bush, Max Carey, Ty Cobb, Mickey Cochrane, Eddie Collins, Stanley Coveleski, Sam Gray, Slim Harriss, Rogers Hornsby, Walter Johnson, Bill Lamar, Lee Meadows, Jack Quinn, Ed Rommel, Ray Schalk, Tris Speaker, and Dazzy Vance. In addition to the cut signature, Bender also wrote a letter back to our consignor on hotel stationery which reads: My dear sir, I have done as you requested and am enclosing the two slips of paper signed. Am glad to know that you are deeply interested in our national pastime of baseball. Yours very truly "Chief" C.A. Bender. A total of 122 cards, mostly low grade but with many highlights, from eight different issues are included as follows: 1) 1911 T205 Gold Border: three cards including McGraw; 2) 1909-11 T206 White Border: three cards including Mathewson (dark cap); 3) 1916 H801-9 Globe Clothing Store: 45 cards including Baker, Carey, Cicotte, Cobb, Lajoie, Marquard, Wheat, Wagner, Walsh (2), Weaver; 4) 1919-21 W514: ten cards including Stengel; 5) 1920 W516-1: four cards including Hooper, Kelley, Roush; 6) 1921 E121 American Caramel: 24 cards including Baker, Evers, Hooper, Jennings; 7) 1922 E120 American Caramel: 31 cards including Cobb, Collins, Grimes, Hooper, Hornsby, Hoyt, Luque, Rice. The cards range in grade from Pr to Vg, averaging Fr-Gd overall. The two additional cards are mounted on pages with signatures: an E120 of Joe Bush (Gd) and a 1920s Otto Treulich & Son photographic card of Grover Cleveland Alexander. This is a very rare sample card issued by a Chicago clothier company. The card is glued down but could be removed and has otherwise survived in Excellent condition. This is a fascinating original "boyhood" collection of signatures and cards direct from the 1920s. Total 139 items (19 signed cuts, and 122 baseball cards). LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $7,540.00
