1877 Boston Team Cabinet Card with George Wright

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $6,380.00

Extremely rare 1877 Boston BBC team cabinet photograph by legendary photographer J. Wood (208 Bowery). This is one of the premier team cabinet cards of the 1870s. The composite photograph features portraits of twelve members of the National League championship 1877 Boston Base Ball Club. Hall of Fame shortstop George Wright is pictured in the center above ace right hander Tommy Bond. Bond enjoyed a phenomenal season in 1877 as he became the first hurler in baseball history to win the pitcher's version of the "Triple Crown" (League leader in wins, ERA and strikeouts). Other Boston players featured are Hall of Famer Jim O'Rourke, Deacon White, Lew Brown, Andy Leonard, John Morrill (spelled "Morrell" on the card), Tim Murnane, Ezra Sutton, Will White, Harry Schafer (spelled "Shaffer" on the card) and a player identified only as "Maning." The photographer's name ("J. Wood") and address ("208 Bowery) is printed along the lower margin. The reverse of the card also displays the J. Wood Studios advertising imprint and two affixed advertisements for George Wright's sporting goods company, as well as a brief period newspaper clipping listing Boston's championship seasons, and brief pencil notations instructing the return of the card to George Wright (according to our authenticators, this is not a signature). The cabinet card (4.25 x 6.5 inches) displays some even wear at the corners (which are naturally rounded as made) and a few very tiny creases. Superb contrast. There are probably no more than five or six examples of this significant rarity known to exist. Very Good condition. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $6,380.00
