1933 R319 Goudey Complete Set of 239 (No #106 Lajoie)

Starting Bid - $4,000.00, Sold For - $20,880.00

34% Ex, 34% range from Vg-Ex to Vg-Ex/Ex, 25% Vg, 7% Gd. The vast majority of cards in the set have been downgraded from Excellent to the Vg-Ex to Vg-Ex/Ex range primarily due to corner wear. 70% of the cards (including thirty-nine Hall of Famers) have very light pencil writing on the back along the top border, which has been neatly erased, but is still detectable upon extremely close examination. The grades presented in the set composite above and for all individually graded cards (below) are without reference to these erased pencil notations on the reverses. Assembled one card at a time by a devoted collector in 1933, this set has been saved and consigned to this auction directly from the family of the original owner. This is a very attractive, consistent, and carefully assembled set, in an extremely desirable but still relatively affordable grade. Cards with small erasures will earn an "MK" qualifier if graded by PSA, but we cannot emphasize enough how minor these erasures are. We have scanned some sample reverses and posted them online to show how minor the flaw is, and on many cards the flaw may not be visible at all unless viewed under proper lighting conditions in person. The 1933 Goudey set is the first major gum card set of the 1930s and is universally recognized as the most popular and significant set of the era. Highlighted by four Babe Ruths and two Lou Gehrigs, the set includes all the stars of the 1930s, including an incredible sixty Hall of Famers (all of which are graded individually below). We have selected ten cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA, including all four Babe Ruth cards and both Lou Gehrig cards. Keys: #1 Bengough (Fr), 2 Vance (Gd-Vg), 5 Herman (Vg), 7 Lyons (Gd-Vg), 19 Dickey (Gd-Vg), 20 Terry (Gd-Vg), 22 Traynor (Vg), 23 Cuyler (Gd-Vg), 25 Waner (Gd), 29 Foxx (Gd), 31 Lazzeri (Vg), 35 Simmons (Gd-Vg), 42 Collins (Vg-Ex), 44 Bottomley (Vg), 47 Manush (Vg), 49 Frisch (Vg), 53 Ruth (PSA GD 2 [MK]), 56 Ruffing (Vg-Ex), 60 Hoyt (Vg-Ex), 63 Cronin (Ex), 64 Grimes (Vg-Ex/Ex), 73 Haines (Vg), 74 Rixey (Gd-Vg), 76 Cochrane (Vg due to tiny surface chip, otherwise Vg-Ex), 79 Faber (Vg-Ex), 89 Speaker (Ex), 92 Gehrig (PSA VG-EX 4), 102 Jackson (Vg), 103 Coombs (Ex), 107 Manush (Vg), 109 Cronin (Ex), 110 Goslin (90/10 L/R, otherwise Ex), 117 Maranville (Vg-Ex), 119 Hornsby (Ex), 125 Terry (Ex), 127 Ott (Vg-Ex/Ex), 128 Klein (Vg), 133 Lindstrom (Vg-Ex/Ex), 134 Rice (Vg-Ex), 138 Pennock (15/85 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), 144 Ruth (PSA EX 5 [MK]), 147 Durocher (Ex), 149 Ruth (PSA VG-EX 4 [MK]), 154 Foxx (Vg-Ex/Ex), 158 Berg (Ex), 160 Gehrig (PSA VG-EX 4), 164 Waner (Vg-Ex/Ex), 168 Goslin (Vg/Vg-Ex), 181 Ruth (PSA VG-EX 4 [MK]), 187 Manush (Vg/Vg-Ex), 188 Hornsby (PSA VG-EX 4), 189 Cronin (Vg/Vg-Ex), 194 Averill (Vg-Ex), 197 Ferrell (Ex), 202 Hartnett (Gd-Vg), 207 Ott (Vg), 211 Wilson (PSA EX 5), 216 Gomez (Vg/Vg-Ex), 220 Grove (15/85 to the bottom right, otherwise Vg), 222 Gehringer (no bottom border, otherwise Vg), 223 Dean (PSA EX 5), 227 Herman (Vg), 229 Vaughan (Vg-Ex/Ex), 230 Hubbell (Vg/Vg-Ex), 234 Hubbell (PSA EX 5), and 240 Schumacher (Vg-Ex). In a world where a single high-grade 1933 Goudey key card can sell for more than this entire set, a carefully assembled mid-grade 1933 Goudey set such as this with such exceptional eye-appeal is rarely offered, and is widely appreciated for the rare and outstanding value it represents. Total 239 cards. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000/$12,000. SOLD FOR $20,880.00
