1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco Casey Stengel

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $20,880.00

Graded VG 3 by PSA. Magnificent example of key T210 Red Border Casey Stengel, featured as an outfielder with Maysville of the Blue Grass League, at the very beginning of his career. This is one of card collecting's most interesting and noteworthy tobacco card rarities. Stengel (from Series 6) is not quite as rare as Joe Jackson (from Series 8) in the T210 Old Mill set, though it is an extremely rare card in its own right, and still far rarer than a T206 Wagner, with approximately 15 examples known. Together Jackson and Stengel are the two most famous cards from this series, and two of the rarest and most highly prized of all tobacco cards. The offered example is an extremely attractive card, far better than most T210 Old Mill cards (which with their bright red borders are so susceptible to corner and edge wear). Bright and clean, with very consistent, even corner rounding, fairly well-centered (approximately 60/40 left to right), and with virtually no chipping to the fragile red borders. The reverse has some very light staining along the bottom, of very little consequence, and is otherwise bright and clean, with strong, crisp printing of the advertisement for Old Mill Cigarettes. The front of the card has only a single very tiny hairline surface crease to Stengel's right (running from his sleeve to the border), and a similar tiny surface crease in the extreme upper left corner, both barely visible only when the card is tilted at the proper angle. Difficult to value because of its extreme rarity, the only other example to come to auction in recent years was the much higher grade SGC EX card which was offered in 2005 and which sold for $29,475. This is an extremely attractive and pleasing Very Good condition example of one of card collecting's most fascinating rarities. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000. SOLD FOR $20,880.00
