1889 Kid Nichols Cabinet Card

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,160.00

Striking professional studio portrait cabinet of Hall of Famer Charles "Kid" Nichols with Omaha in circa 1889 just prior to joining the Boston Nationals the following year. Manufactured by Heyn Studios of Omaha, Nebraska, with very elaborate advertising for the studio on reverse. Charles "Kid" Nichols was one of baseball's first successful power pitchers, finishing his career with 361 wins, a total surpassed by just six pitchers in the history of the game. An immediate success after he was signed by Boston manager Frank Selee in 1890, Nichols won twenty or more games in his first ten seasons in the Major Leagues and led his club to five National League championships. He pitched more than 400 innings five times, and more than 300 in all but one season. His total of seven 30-win seasons is a record that will likely stand forever. Before his Major League debut, Nichols was a star pitcher for Omaha in 1889, and it is with Omaha that Nichols is pictured both on this portrait and his five poses in N172 Old Judge. This photograph has perfect contrast and photo quality. The cabinet card has had professional restoration to a vertical crack in the center which gives the appearance of a vertical center crease. The work is exceptional, and is easily apparent only by viewing the reverse of the mount. The card displays beautifully with a Very Good to Excellent appearance. Despite the condition problem, this is an extraordinary portrait cabinet card, and very likely the only example known. Ideal for display and a worthy addition to any advanced nineteeth-century baseball, Hall of Fame, or rookie card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
