1880s to circa 1905 Cabinet Card Collection (9)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $9,860.00

Collection of nine different cabinet cards featuring baseball players dating from the late 1880s to the early 1900s. Included are several different style cabinet cards, some with advertisements on the reverses, by different photographers. 1) Tom Dowse, Cleveland. John H. Ryder Studios. Dowse was with Cleveland only in 1890. Reverse has Dowse's home address pasted on with instructions to return photo. Ex. 2) Charlie Weber, Sioux City. Hamilton Studios of Sioux City, Iowa. Player identification is written on back and minor paper loss to reverse, otherwise Ex. 3) Owen Williams, Davenport. Hastings Studios of Davenport, Iowa. Player identification and date (1888) in ink on reverse. Ex. 4) Kirby White, Boston. Extremely desirable cabinet photograph by legendary photographer Carl J. Horner. Crisp Ex-Mt with virtually flawless mount. 5) Dave Brain, St. Louis. Carl J. Horner Studios. Foxing and light wear to the mount, overall Vg. 6) Scrappy Carroll, St. Paul. 1889 Goodwin & Co. proof card by Philman Studios of St. Joseph, Missouri. This studio provided many images for use by Goodwin in the N172 and N173 Old Judge series. The "Copyright 1889 Goodwin & Co" imprint is very bold. Nr/Mt. 7-8) Two cabinets featuring the same player reaching for a catch (player is unidentified but possibly Fred Tenny of Boston): In one image he is facing to the right, in the other he faces to the left. We believe these are circa 1905. Both photos are on slightly larger than traditional cabinet card mounts (9 x 7 inches) and both mounts have the photographer's imprint embossed in the lower right (Darley Studios of Malden, Mass.) The photos are Mint, the mounts are Vg-Ex. 9) circa 1888 unidentified Brooklyn player by Brooklyn photography studio Gardner & Company. Advertising for photography studio on reverse. This is an impressive card but grades Vg due to foxing (would otherwise be Ex), with a very sharp, crisp image. This is an outstanding and unusually high-quality collection of nineteenth and early twentieth-century baseball cabinet card photographs. Total 9 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $9,860.00
