Circa 1910 Cy Young Tobacco Tin

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $4,930.00

Extremely rare and exceptionally high-grade example of the Cy Young Tobacco tin. The Cy Young Cigar tin is one of only two early tobacco tins which feature the likeness of a specific baseball player. The other is the legendary Ty Cobb Tobacco tin. The Cy Young tin is of a similar rarity to the Ty Cobb Tobacco tin, with just a few more examples known to exist (approximately ten or twelve). The cylindrical tin features a portrait of Cy Young on each side, surrounded by small baseball illustrations on the side of each portrait, as well as the words "By Permission of Cy Young," with "Cy Young" appearing as a facsimile signature. A small box on the side indicates that the cigars were "manufactured to retail at not more than 5 cents." It is likely that this tin actually sat on the counter of the cigar store dispensing cigars one at a time as well as helping to sell entire tins of 50 cigars at a time. The Cy Young tobacco tin is one of the most outstanding and attractive baseball advertising display pieces of the era, and one of the few to feature the likeness of the great Cy Young. Few advertising items are as well known outside of baseball collecting circles. Like the Ty Cobb tin, the Cy Young tin is valued not just in the baseball world, but is also highly prized as one of the rarest and most valuable of all tins in the (non-baseball) advertising and tobacco tin collecting hobby. This is an extremely high-grade example for any early tin. Bright, crisp, and clean, in Excellent condition with just a few small scattered areas of minor rusting (which is almost always the case with early tins) which does not affect the design or perfect portraits of Cy Young. This is a beauty and one of the best of the few known examples of this significant rarity. Dimensions: 5 inches in height and diameter. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000. SOLD FOR $4,930.00
