Circa 1910 Cy Young Cigar Box

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $6,380.00

This extraordinary Cy Young Cigar box is one of only two known examples. This extremely attractive wooden cigar box was manufactured in Young's home state of Ohio by the Sweet Home Co. The colorful interior label features a striking oval portrait of Young set against the background of a game in progress. Below Young's portrait, against a yellow background, the label reads "By Permission Cy Young" and "Famous The World Over." The interior color illustration is one of the most visually appealing of all baseball cigar labels. It is interesting to note that no proof examples of either of the three different labels featuring Cy Young's portrait on this box (two small box sealing labels on the outside, one larger label on interior lid) have ever surfaced. The top of the box boldly announces "The Cy Young Cigar" in black. The blue 1901 series tax stamp strip is still affixed to the exterior of the box. This box was originally part of the Barry Halper Collection. It appeared as Lot #346 in the famous Halper auction, where it sold for $10,350 at that time, and was purchased at the auction by our consignor. In cataloguing this box for this auction, an additional interesting note regarding the box has been provided by Mr. Halper. We asked Barry Halper if he remembered where he originally obtained this box, and were fascinated to learn that he acquired this box from a collection of materials directly from the Cy Young estate. This box was saved by, and once belonged personally to, Cy Young. There are staining and flaws to the two exterior labels which also feature Young's portrait (which, being on the outside, are naturally subject to wear), otherwise the box is in overall Excellent condition. Dimensions: 8.25 x 5 x 2.25 inches. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $6,380.00
