1861 to 1881 Beadle Dime Base-ball Player Near-Complete Run (16/20)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $5,800.00

The Beadle Dime Base-ball Player, edited by Henry Chadwick, is of extraordinary significance since it was the very first baseball guide. First published in 1860, this annual guide presented all important information relating to the game of baseball, including rules and regulations, rule changes, proceedings of the annual baseball conventions including rule changes, history of the game, team rosters and representatives, accounts of the previous season for the most prominent teams, statistics including averages, scores of important games, etc. The Beadle guide was published annually from 1860 through 1881. We believe that there was no Beadle guide issued in 1863, due to the Civil War. Early 1860s Beadle guides are particularly rare. Presented is a virtually unheard of near-complete run of Beadle Dime Base-ball Player guides. Included are sixteen Beadle guides spanning the years 1861 to 1881, missing only 1863, 1865, 1869, 1871, and 1874 for completion. Fourteen of the sixteen guides have been hardbound with handsome protective covers for easy handling; 1877 and 1880 have not been bound. All have guide covers intact with the exception of the 1864 and 1870 editions which have covers missing. Covers are Vg-Ex to Ex, with the following noted exceptions: the covers to 1861 and 1862 guides are Good with small clear tape repair; 1872 front cover is covered with a protective clear tape; 1873 cover has a piece missing in lower right (approximately 10% of cover); 1875 cover is Vg. The interior pages of all sixteen guides are very clean and are generally Vg-Ex or better, in many cases Excellent. This run presents a voluminous amount of important information compiled by Henry Chadwick relating to the earliest days of the game, much of it found nowhere else. They represent a worthy foundation to the most advanced library devoted to nineteenth-century baseball. This is an extraordinary and unprecedented near-set offering of these extremely rare and important early guides. Total 16 guides. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $5,800.00
