1867 Southern Base Ball Club of New Orleans Championship Trophy Cup

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,740.00

This early silver-colored metal championship trophy cup, possibly sterling but not marked, was presented to the "Southern Base Ball Club of New Orleans" in 1867. This very high quality trophy cup is beautifully engraved on the front "La State Fair Association Baton Rouge - To the Champion Base Ball Club - 1867" and on the opposite side "Won by the Southern Base Ball Club of New Orleans," with decorative patterns and accents. The year 1867 is extremely early for any baseball trophy, but this example is all the more unusual in that it is from New Orleans. This is the only baseball piece of any kind from the 1860s from this region that we have seen. The Midwest (Chicago area), the East Coast, and the entire New York region in particular were a hotbed of activity for organized baseball in the 1860s, but there were few organized teams at this time in the South and Southwest. New Orleans was a major port for shipping goods to and from New York in the 1860s, and this probably accounts for the relatively advanced development of the game in New Orleans at this early date as evidenced by this trophy. A series of barely legible, very fine characters, similar to that found on quality pocket watch casings, on the bottom of the trophy are some type of manufacturing identification and appear to primarily be numbers. Very minor wear from handling and a few spots of very light tarnish, otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Height: 6.75 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,740.00
