1856 thru 1858 Porter's Spirit of the Times Newspapers Including Fashion Course Ga

Two bound volumes of the weekly sporting and entertainment newspaper Porter's Spirit of the Times. One volume covers issues from Sept. 6, 1856 thru August 29th, 1857. The second volume covers issues from March 6th, 1858 thru August 28th, 1858. Includes incredible period coverage of baseball games between the top teams of the era including coverage of the "Fashion Course Games" of 1858. Especially significant 1856 article on the rules of baseball which reads in part, "We have been so inudated with communications in reference to the mode of playing the game, that although we gave direction in our last issue as to where the rules of the game could be purchased, we have concluded to give a diagram and rules, in order that those who desire to form clubs may be prepared for action at the commencement of the next season." The article is accompanied by one of the earliest published baseball diagrams and rules available to the public and is followed by a profile of the Knickerbockers. Another article in December 1856 features rules and a diagram of the "New England Game of Base Ball." These newspapers are literally a treasure trove of information and period accounts relating to the earliest days of organized baseball. Excellent condition. Total 2 volumes. Reserve $500.
