1951-1955 Team Issued Autographed Postcard Collection (165)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,770.00

Extraordinary original owner collection of 165 team-issued signed postcards. These postcards were sent to collector Jim Davidson between 1951 and 1955, in response to his written requests, and are all addressed to him. In the 1950s several teams, among them the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Browns, and the Cleveland Indians, issued sets of postcards specifically for players to autograph and send to fans. The St. Louis postcard sets (often referred to as the "Dear Friend..." sets because of their design) have always been especially popular and sought after. Few young fans had the patience to write to so many players. It is very rare to find such a substantial collection of these team-issued signed postcards, which were available only one at a time, in response to written request. The collection includes the following: 1) St. Louis Cardinals "Dear Friend...." Glossy Photo Postcards (33, including two Ken Boyer and two Enos Slaughter). 2) St. Louis Cardinals "Dear Friend..." Non-Glossy Photo Postcards (19, including Slaughter [2], Schoendienst [3], and Garagiola). All are addressed and postmarked on the reverse. 3) 1954 ABC Freight Postcard Ted Kluszewski (preprinted signature). 4) 1951 Olmes Studio Postcard Robin Roberts (Gd). 5) 1953 St. Louis Browns Photo Postcards (20, including Paige [secretarial], Marion, Larsen [3], Wertz [3], and many more. 6) Cleveland Indians Glossy Photo Postcards (40, including Feller [2], Wynn [2], Lemon [2], Garcia [2], Lopez, Mitchell, Avila [2], Kiner, Rosen, and much more). 7) Pittsburgh Pirates Glossy and Non-Glossy Photo Postcards (16, including Ward, Del Greco, Kline, etc). 8) New York Giants Glossy Photo Postcards (10 including Hearn [2], Rigney [3], Lockman [4], and H. Thompson [secretarial]). 9) Boston and Milwaukee Braves Glossy Photo Postcards (4, including Mathews, and Marshall [2]). 10) Boston Red Sox Glossy Photo Postcards (9 including Boudreau [2], Dom DiMaggio [2], Piersall, Gernert [2], and O'Neill). 11) Baltimore Orioles Glossy Photo Postcards (4, including Diering, J. Coleman, Kellert, and P. Richards). 12) Detroit Tigers Glossy Photo Postcards (2, including Garver and Hitchcock). 13) Jackie Robinson Glossy Photo Postcard (preprinted signature). 14) New York Yankees Glossy Photo Postcards (3, including Frank Crosetti, Turley and Woodling [both with preprinted signatures]). 15) Chicago White Sox (2: Howell and P. Richards [stamped]). 16) Cincinnati Reds Non-Glossy Photo Postcards (4: Palys, Merriman, Harmon, and Adams). Total 165 postcards. 129 of the postcards are addressed and postmarked on the reverse. 85% are autographed (signatures range from "7" to "9" overall) and 15% have facsimile (preprinted) or secretarial signatures. The postcards themselves are in Excellent condition overall. This collection has been consigned directly by original owner Jim Davidson, who personally assembled the collection by writing to the ballplayers as a youngster some fifty years ago. LOAs from James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA and Mike Gutierrez/GAI. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,770.00
