1940 John J. Evers Signed Sporting News Baseball Registry Contract

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,276.00

In 1940 The Sporting News began publication of the "The Baseball Registry" which remains, to this day, one of the most popular and informative of all annual baseball guides. One of the interesting features of the guide was the reproduction of of each ballplayer's signature next to his listed playing record. This practice required The Sporting News to obtain a signature example and written consent of each player. The publisher sent out standard one-page releases for that express purpose. Presented is one of those signature releases, boldly signed "John J. Evers" ("8") in black fountain pen. The signed contract grants The Sporting News permission to reproduce Evers' signature in the Baseball Register. Hall of Famer Johnny Evers may have been the best player of the famed Cub infield trio. He batted .350 in the 1907 and 1908 World Series wins, driving in the winning run both years. He later managed the Cubs and helped the Braves to their unlikely World Championship in 1914. Evers was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946. The contract exhibits normal mailing fold lines and a single staple hole in the upper left corner and is otherwise in Excellent condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,276.00
