Circa 1883 Our Club Cigar Box

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,160.00

Extremely unusual circa 1880s miniature wooden cigar box, measuring 4.75 x 2.75 x 2.5 inches, once held twenty-five small "Our Club" brand panatelas cigars. The top of the lid features a very colorful baseball label with an arrangement of three baseballs, four bats, and a hat. The label has an unusual, surreal quality in that the bats and hat are not to scale with the balls. Because the box is so small compared to a normal cigar box, the interior label is actually of a style and size usually associated with side labels of larger, standard-sized cigar boxes. "Our Club" is burned onto the top of the wooden lid. The exterior tax stamp and factory labels, which are also designed for a larger box, give the box an additional unusual quality. The tax stamp is dated "Series of 1883." This is a very rare early cigar box, and a very distinctive and unique nineteenth-century baseball display piece. Excellent condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
