1944 Babe Ruth Signed Letter and Related Baseball

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $8,120.00

This lot includes two Ruth signed items: a letter written and signed by Babe Ruth, and an Official American League (Harridge) baseball signed by Ruth and others which is referred to by the letter. The one-page typed letter, written on Hotel President, New York, stationery and dated "August 11, 1944," is to a youngster in response to an autograph request. The letter reads in full: "Dear Vern, It was nice to receive your letter which I delayed in answering due to the fact that I have been kept quite busy and just could not get to it. I am glad that you are very much interested in baseball and instead of sending you an autographed picture, I am sending you under separate cover a baseball autographed by myself, Eddie Collins, George Sisler, Frank Baker, 'Tris' Speaker, Lefty Grove, Lou Costello, Walter Johnson and Bud Abbott. If you will have your father or someone cover this ball with white shellac, the signatures will not wear off and you can keep it for an indefinite period. Keep the interest of your boy pals and yourself up in Baseball and wishing you lots of luck, I remain, Your Pal, [signed] Babe Ruth" ("10"). Accompanying the letter is the ball Babe Ruth sent which, per the Babe's personal instructions, has been covered with a coat of shellac, which is slightly uneven and has darkened with age. Of special note is the fact that Ruth had this ball signed at a special dinner which was held in honor of Connie Mack's Golden Jubilee as a Major League manager. The dinner was at the Warwick Hotel on August 4, 1944, just a week prior to Ruth's letter. Attendees included Babe Ruth and many great stars from the past, including all those who signed the ball. The highlight of the evening's entertainment was the appearance of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello to perform their classic baseball skit, "Who's on First?" The signatures on the ball grade as follows: Babe Ruth (side panel, "6"), Speaker (sweet spot, "7"), Collins ("2"), Sisler ("6"), Baker ("5"), Grove ("3"), Walter Johnson ("4"), Costello ("5"), and Bud Abbott ("6"). The ball is in Good condition. The letter has normal mailing folds with a small stain in the typed text (very minor) and is overall in Excellent condition. The letter is accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked August 11, 1944 (with no handwritten notations). This is a very interesting pair of Ruth signed items, including a Babe Ruth signed letter with a flawless signature. While the signed ball is not one of the most attractive we have seen, in combination with the letter it makes for a very interesting and unique display, especially since the only reason it has not survived in a more attractive state is due to Ruth's advice in his letter. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $8,120.00
