1930 Ray Schalk Chicago Cubs Team-Signed Presentation Photo Album

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $6,380.00

In 1930, a special signed photo album was prepared and presented as a keepsake to each member of the Chicago Cubs, in the wake of their season as National League champs in 1929. Presented is catcher Ray Schalk's personal photo album, featuring the entire 1930 Chicago Cubs team; the thirty photographs, each of a single uniformed player, are mounted one per page and exquisitely bound between two black leather soft-covers. The cover reads "Ray Schalk," "The Cubs," and "1930" in gold lettering. The photographs were taken by legendary sports photographer George Burke of Chicago and are in Near Mint to Mint condition. Twenty-nine of the thirty photographs have been signed, many with added salutations and personalizations to Ray Schalk. Ray Schalk's photograph is not signed as this was his personal album. Fellow catcher Gabby Hartnett has signed most elaborately, "To my 'Pal' Ray Schalk, one of the greatest catchers of all time, a marvelous fellow, and always a perfect gentleman. Yours Truly, Leo 'Gabby' Hartnett" ("8"). The photographs each measure 4 x 6 inches. All have bold, clear signatures which have been protected from the elements in the confines of the album since 1930. The 1930 Cubs were a powerhouse team. Included were seven future Hall of Famers: Ray Schalk, Joe McCarthy, Gabby Hartnett, KiKi Cuyler, Rogers Hornsby, George Kelly, and Hack Wilson. The signatures range in grade from "6" to "9" on a scale of "1" to "10," averaging a "7/8" overall. The album measures 5.25 x 8.75 inches. Some minor wear to the covers, which are overall Excellent. The interior pages and mounted photographs are in Near Mint or better condition. This is a spectacular example, one of only two or three known, of the ultimate 1930 Chicago Cubs team-signed item, once belonging to Hall of Famer Ray Schalk. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $6,380.00
