Bill McKechnie Testimonial Dinner Program Signed by Honus Wagner, Branch Rickey, Etc.

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $928.00

Eight-page program (6 x 9 inches) from Bill McKechnie's testimonial dinner held at the William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh on May 3, 1927, signed by Honus Wagner and Branch Rickey. The dinner was held in appreciation for McKechnie's services as manager (1922-1926) for the Pittsburgh Pirates. McKechnie had led the Pirates to glory in 1925, defeating the Senators in the World Series, and was leaving the Pirates as manager before the start of the 1927 season, a year in which they also would go on to win the National League pennant. The guest speakers for the celebration were John K. Tener (Governor of Pennsylvania and former NL president), Branch Rickey, and Samuel E. Watters (secretary of the Pirates). The program opens vertically, and the last page is specifically provided for "Autographs." There are eleven signatures on this designated page, highlighted by those of Honus Wagner (very largely and boldly signed "J. Honus Wagner" in purple ink) and Branch Rickey (neatly and boldly signed in pencil below Wagner). Both signatures are virtually flawless ("9/10"), having been perfectly preserved and protected from all elements within the confines of the program since 1927. The original binding silk ribbon is no longer present (which attached the cover to the rest of the program pages) but the other seven pages are held together with the original staple. This is a very rare testimonial dinner program celebrating the Pirates manager, Hall of Famer Bill McKechnie, and including one of the most impressive Honus Wagner signatures we have ever seen. In Excellent condition. ,b>Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $928.00
