1927 New York Yankees Signed Payroll Check Collection (6)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,088.00

Collection of six original Yankee payroll checks, all dating from 1927, all signed on their fronts by both Ed Barrow and Jacob Ruppert (unless otherwise specified). The checks are made out to (and endorsed on the reverse by) the following players: 1) Anthony Lazzeri, dated May 31, 1927, in the amount of $1,275.04. It is interesting to note that Lazzeri's name was misspelled on the front of the check as "Anthony Lazzari," and fascinating to note that he carefully endorsed it with this incorrect spelling. 2) Julian Wera, dated June 30, 1927, in the amount of $212.26. 3) Cedric Durst, dated July 29, 1927, in the amount of $795.96. 4) John Nee (Yankees scout), dated June 15, 1927, in the amount of $250.00. 5) Eugene McCann (Yankees scout), dated January 31, 1927, in the amount of $416.67. McCann died in 1943 and his signature is scarce in any form. 6) Mark Koenig, dated Sept. 30, 1927, in the amount of $659.54. This check represents the last payment for his regular 1927 season play, and is noted on back in type "In full payment of salary for season 1927." Countersigned on the front by Jacob Ruppert (the Barrow signature was presumably trimmed from the left side along the margin, making its absence noticeable only to someone familiar with the design of these checks, although it is also possible the check was issued in this manner). The endorsed signatures on the reverse grade an "8" overall, with the exception of Lazzeri which is light but still very legible ("2" or "3"), and all but one signature (Wera) is affected by the cancellation marks on the reverse. All of the checks have normal fold lines and are in Excellent condition. This is a unique collection of six original Yankee payroll checks dating from the legendary 1927 season. Total 6 checks. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,088.00
