1922 Christy Mathewson Signed Checkers Instructional Manual

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $26,100.00

In addition to being one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game, Christy Mathewson was also a world-class checkers player. No history of Mathewson's career and life is complete without prominent mention of his interest in the game. This 160-page hardbound checkers instructional book (4.5 x 6 inches) once belonged to Mathewson, and is signed and inscribed in black fountain pen by Mathewson on the front flyleaf page. The inscription reads, "This book belonged to my cousin George Griswold and was presented to me by his widow Aug 12 1922, Christy Mathewson." The signature and inscription have been perfectly protected from the elements in the confines of the book, and grade a flawless "10" on a scale of "1 to 10." Forty-seven of the interior pages have one or more notations written in pencil by Mathewson, including the back inside cover, on which he has signed just his last name ("Mathewson," "9") in pencil below some extensive checkers notes and a mounted checkers-related newspaper clipping. This is a fascinating, and for Mathewson, a very significant, signed personal item relating to one of Mathewson's greatest lifelong interests, and representing his competitive nature and dedication to another wholesome game besides the game of baseball. The title of the book is Durgin's Single Corner (Edwin Durgin, John T. Denvir Publishing, Chicago, 1894). This book originates from the Mathewson family. Some minor wear to the spine and hardcover of the book, otherwise in Excellent condition. Accompanied by a non-vintage print of Mathewson playing checkers with his father in 1922. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $26,100.00
