1863 George Wright CDV

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,350.00

1863 carte de visite photograph of Hall of Famer George Wright was taken when Wright was only sixteen years old. Before George Wright was a baseball player, he was, like his father, Sam, and his older brother Harry, a star cricket player. In this photograph George is pictured in full uniform holding a cricket paddle at his side. George Wright, of course, was one of baseball's greatest early stars and key member of the legendary 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. Of special note is the fact that this card originates from the very same find which long ago included the 1863 "Grand Match At Hoboken" Benefit card of Harry Wright, considered by many to be the very first baseball card. This CDV of George Wright was produced at exactly the same time in 1863, and by the same photographer as the famous Harry Wright card. According to known records, however, this card was not a part of the set which includes the Harry Wright card which was sold to raise funds for New York and Brooklyn clubs in conjunction with benefit games played at the St. George's Cricket Ground of Hoboken, New Jersey. It is, however, virtually identical in design to those cards, the only difference being that there is no mention on the reverse of admiting the bearer of the card to the St. George's Cricket Grounds for the benefit games, or the dates of the games. Comparison of this card with the Harry Wright card easily shows that both photographs were taken at the same studio, in front of exactly the same wall with identical moulding pattern. The unique floor pattern is identical also, as expected. The George Wright card also features the same Jordan & Company Photographic studios imprint on the reverse. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only known example of this extraordinary card. The photograph of George Wright is in Mint condition with virtually flawless contrast. The corners of the mount are clipped. Both the George Wright and Harry Wright cards were discovered with the corners of the mounts clipped in this identical manner. The card is crisp and clean and otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $4,350.00
