1949 Bowman PCL Complete Set (36)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,510.00

Complete 1949 Bowman PCL set (36 cards). This issue has always been one of the legendary rarities of PCL and postwar card collecting. Very clean and attractive set. All thirty-six cards grade within a very narrow range of Vg to Vg-Ex, with all cards free of creases, and most downgraded from higher levels due to just a little corner wear and an occasional pencil mark on reverse. We have selected the following six cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA: #6 (VG-EX 4 - MK), 18 (VG-EX 4), 22 (VG-EX 4), 25 (VG 3 - MK), 33 (VG-EX 4), and 36 (VG-EX 4). It remains a mystery as to exactly why Bowman issued cards featuring PCL players, or exactly how these cards were actually issued. Many believe that Bowman PCL cards were regionally issued in 1949 packs along with regular major-leaguer Bowman cards in some West Coast cities. Some believe they were originally also issued in sheet form, as cards are occasionally found with evidence of having been cut with a scissors, though no uncut sheet has ever surfaced. It is very possible that the set was issued in more than one way. It appears that Bowman wanted to capitalize on the popularity of the PCL but never pursued this marketing concept. This set represents a very rare opportunity to acquire an extremely attractive medium grade complete set of the premier postwar Pacific Coast League set. Total 36 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $5,510.00
