1920s Uncut Strip Card Collection (116 cards on 7 sheets)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,640.00

Offered are four separate styles of strip cards from the 1920s, each presented in its original as-issued uncut form. The period between the 1910 tobacco card era and the introduction of bubble-gum cards in the 1930s was very quiet among card manufacturers, despite the fact that those years witnessed Ruth's prime, as well as the rise of Gehrig, and a host of other eventual Hall of Famers. Many players in these sets appear in few other issues. For some players, the strip cards are their only appearance on a baseball card. With few exceptions, cards from the "Roaring Twenties" are not plentiful. Though they are not known for their extraordinary production quality, they do represent an important and often overlooked era in card collecting and are beginning to be recognized for the outstanding value they represent compared with most other vintage cards. 1) 1926 W512 uncut sheet of twenty-five cards includes five baseball players (#6-10) in the top row including Ruth. The balance of the sheet features cards of other sporting stars (including Bill Tilden, Walter Hagen, and Johnny Weismuller), actors, and five boxers. Ruth is situated in the upper left corner and is technically about Gd. The sheet is overall Vg-Ex with interior cards Mint. 2) 1925 W504 Universal Toy Brooklyn Dodgers: uncut sheet of seventeen cards includes the complete set of sixteen Brooklyn Dodgers players plus team card. 5.5 x 13 inches. Vg-Ex/Ex. 3) 1927 W560 Playing Cards. Four uncut sheets, each featuring sixteen cards, representing the complete set. These cards were intended to be cut up to create a playing-card deck. The set includes forty-nine baseball players (including Ruth and Gehrig) plus a few additional prominent sporting figures of the day (Jack Dempsey, Ken Strong, etc.). Overall in Excellent condition. Interior cards including Ruth and Gehrig are Nr/Mt-Mt. A couple of sheets have light corner creases and moderate corner wear, still overall in Excellent condition. 4) 1920 W551 complete set of ten on an uncut strip as issued. Mildly rounded corners on end cards (Ruth and Sisler) but otherwise clean and without creases. Ex. Total 116 cards on six sheets and one strip. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $4,640.00
