1911 M116 Sporting Life Collection (131)

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $3,190.00

Collection of 131 different M116 Sporting Life cards including sixteen Hall of Famers. All of the cards in this collection, at first glance, present as Excellent condition overall, but upon very close inspection we have determined that every card has been slightly trimmed along the bottom edge. This is very subtle, and was not even noticed by our consignor who has had the cards in his collection for many years. It was obviously done long ago, probably to allow the cards to fit in an early style plastic sheet which loaded horizontally and was made for cards just a little smaller than M116s (probably English tobacco cards). Keys: Baker (black), Bender (pastel), Bresnahan (pastel), M. Brown (pastel), Chance (pastel), Clarke (pastel), E. Collins (pastel), Crawford (pastel), Duffy, Griffith, Huggins, Jennings (pastel), Johnson, Mathewson (pastel), McGraw, and Tinker. Non-Hall of Famers include Atkins, R. Collins, Curtis, H. Davis (blue), Dooin (blue), L. Doyle (blue), Evans, Ford, E. Gardner (NY), L. Gardner (Bost), D. Jones (blue), McQuillan (blue), Meloan, Myers, Oakes, Titus, J. Walsh (gray and white). Sporting Life was a major competitor of The Sporting News in the early part of the twentieth century. The Sporting Life set was issued in 24 series of 12 cards each, sold by mail for four cents per series. M116s are one of the most significant and substantial issues of the era, and are considerably scarcer than their tobacco card counterparts. This collection represents an extraordinary value and a unique opportunity for the collector who wants beautiful original ungraded examples of these classics, at a far more affordable level than graded examples with a similar appearance. Total 131 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
