1910 E222 AWH Caramels (Virginia League) Shaughnessy

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,900.00

Sample card from one of the rarest of all "E" card sets, catalogued E222, issued in 1910 by the A. W. H. Caramel Company, featuring players from the Virginia League. To date, only ten different examples have been found. The cards measure 1.5 x 2.75 inches and picture a player portrait that is tinted red, black, brown, or blue and white. Presented is a blue and white sample card of first baseman/manager Frank "Shag" Shaughnessy from the 1910 Roanoke Tigers of the Virginia League. Shaughnessy made it to the majors for just a few games in 1905 with Washington, and 1908 with the Athletics, but went on to have a great significance to the game off the field. In 1933, as General Manager of the International League's Montreal Royals, Shaughnessy introduced for the first time the concept of a play-off system to create more interest in postseason play. Known as "The Shaughnessy Plan," this format has had a tremendous impact on minor and Major League baseball. Shaugnessy went on to serve as President of the International League for twenty-five years (1936-1960). This card is also very interesting as the pose of Shaughnessy is the very same as that which appears on his T206 baseball card. For A. W. H. Caramel cards, this is a very high-grade example. Excellent appearance, centered 25/75 left to right with a particularly large right border, just a touch of wear in the upper and lower left corners, and no creases. It is possible that this oversized example may have long ago been carefully hand cut from a sheet. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
