Three 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Proofs (Mathews)

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $3,190.00

Presented are three photographs of Mathews of Philadelphia of the American Association which originate from the "Vermont Find" of Old Judge-related materials. This extraordinary find included numerous items relating to Old Judge baseball photography, including approximately fifty original glass plate negatives used to produce Old Judge cabinet cards. All Old Judge glass plate negatives known to exist originate from this find. For the sake of avoiding repetition, please refer to the previous descriptions for more information relating to these Old Judge photographs. The three photographs in this lot are presented framed in their original form, exactly as discovered in the "Vermont Find." We have decided to refrain from placing an estimated value on this and the two similar lots in the auction as our research suggests that the prices these photographs have sold for in the past have been excessive due to bidder reliance on inaccurate information. The Old Judge photographs offered in this auction represent what may be the only significant offering at auction ever of these extraordinary Old Judge photographic prints in their original form, not cut up individually, and offered exactly as discovered in the "Vermont Find" of Old Judge-related materials. The contrast of all three photographs is flawless. All are in Near Mint condition. The Mathews photographs have a slightly darker black and white appearance as opposed to the sepia tone of the Flynn and Doran photographs, and they are slightly larger, each measuring 6.4 x 5.8 inches (as opposed to 5.75 x 4.25). The Mathews photographs are especially interesting as only one of these three poses of Mathews (catching ball, hands head high) was actually issued by Old Judge. If not for the discovery of these proofs, the other two images would be unknown. It is also interesting to note that the two poses which were not issued do not have the "Copyright 1888 Goodwin & Co." legend in white lettering, suggesting that this omission may have some additional significance. Framed to total dimensions of 19 x 9.5 inches. Reserve $2,500. Estimate: (Open). SOLD FOR $3,190.00
