LeRoy Neiman 1968 Lou Gehrig Original Artwork

Starting Bid - $4,000.00, Sold For - $18,400.00

Original painting of Lou Gehrig by LeRoy Neiman. This is an extraordinary early Neiman original, capturing the essence of Lou Gehrig's legendary swing in an extremely sophisticated, yet minimalist profile. Painted in varying shades of black, this work is a masterful and mesmerizing study of shape and form, presenting detail which defines the batting figure as Gehrig, but at the same time interacting with the imagination of the viewer to complete those elements which are not actually present, and which are merely suggested by Neiman. This is an early and very sophisticated style of Neiman original artwork, which looks deceptively simple. This is an extraordinary work of art which engages the viewer and invites contemplation, hallmarks of fine art. After much research, we are reasonably certain that this is the only artwork of Lou Gehrig ever created by LeRoy Neiman. This work was recently shown to Mr. Neiman in person, and he remembered it very fondly as a favorite from the 1960s. The painting title, "Lou Gehrig," appears in pencil, in Neiman's trademark style in the lower left, and the painting is signed by "LeRoy Neiman" in the lower right. Watercolor and ink on cardboard, measuring 17 x 14 ½ inches. Hammer Galleries, which has for decades represented Neiman, and overseen the sale of Neiman's serigraphs and originals, has dated this piece for us to 1968. In Near Mint condition. Beautifully and very expensively matted and framed to total dimensions of 28 x 25 inches. The consignor recently reorganized his collecting interests, and instructed us to place a very modest reserve of $4,000 on this piece. Accompanied by original paperwork documenting the purchase of this work from a gallery for the sum of $24,000. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000/$12,000. SOLD FOR $18,400.00
