1920 Spalding Cardboard Advertising Sign

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,312.50

This full-color cardboard Spalding advertising display poster dates from 1920 and features a larger-than-life hand holding a Spalding Official National League ball in a pitcher's grip, with the caption "The Ball that Won The World's Series" in large type below. The 1920 copyright date in the lower left corner indicates that the World Series referred to in the caption is the scandal-ridden series of 1919, giving this very rare and striking poster subtle and unintended irony. The colors and design make this one of the most striking of all baseball-related advertising signs. We have seen only three examples of this rare advertising poster over the years, including one which was a part of the Barry Halper Collection. That example appeared as lot #60 in the famous Halper Auction and sold for $7,475. The example offered here has five small clean nail holes (almost certainly from period in-store mounting, easily restored if desired) and some light wrinkling near the corners visible upon close inspection, and otherwise has an Excellent appearance. The poster measures 13 x 21 inches and is beautifully matted and shadow-box framed to total dimensions of 19 x 27 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $4,312.50
