1906 New York Giants Spring Training Photographs (25)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,587.50

Collection of 21 original snapshot photographs (each 2.25 x 3.25 inches) of 1906 Giants players, presented in a period photograph scrapbook-style album (9.5 x 7.5 inches), plus an additional snapshot on a cabinet-style mount, plus three "real photo" style postcards. A year after refusing to allow his team to take part in the World Series against what he considered the inferior American League, New York Giants manager John McGraw relented. The Giants made quick work of the Philadelphia Athletics, winning 4 games to 1, and spirits were high coming into camp in 1906. Those high spirits are truly evident in the 21 original photographs found in this 1906 New York Giants spring training photo album. Photos include John McGraw (2), Roger Bresnahan, and Iron Man McGinnity, among others. The two photos of McGraw are identical, and feature him wearing his "World's Champions" uniform. Many of the photos feature the players playing with a large ball, over six feet in height, which was obviously great fun to stand on and to roll around, but about which we can provide no additional information. Of great significance to the collection is the fact that the photos were taken by Christy Mathewson's first cousin, Harry Sisk, and originate directly from his estate. Also included are three photo postcards. One features Jack Dunn and Henry Mathewson (Christy's brother, who was briefly with the Giants in 1906 and 1907) standing next to the big ball, another features Jack Dunn batting. Dunn would later gain fame by signing George Herman Ruth to his first professional contract in 1914. The third postcard features Harry Sisk (whose mother, Frances Mathewson, was Christy's aunt) with Henry Mathewson. This is a fascinating collection of never-before-seen original photographs taken by Christy Mathewson's cousin during spring training of 1906, plus three very interesting real postcards. These nearly 100-year-old photos grade Ex-Mt overall. The photos in the album are glued in along the top border of their reverses, and appear to be very easily removed, if desired. The postcards and the photo album are also Ex-Mt. Total 25 items. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,587.50
