1904 Henry Chadwick Signed Presentation Spalding Guide plus White House Letters (2)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,750.00

1904 Spalding Guide in special custom hardcover red leather binding with "Henry Chadwick" embossed in gold on cover, was Chadwick's personal copy of the 1904 edition of the Guide, for which Chadwick served as editor. In blue pencil, Chadwick has noted on the interior backpage the following: "Return to Mr Henry Chadwick ("8") 245 Steuben St." Chadwick appears in a full page illustration on page 2, opposite the preface, identified as "The Father of Base Ball." We believe that this volume was presented to Chadwick already bound and personalized in this manner, by Spalding, as a special gift for Chadwick's library. Accompanied by a small card (4 x 2.25 inches, in only Good condition) with reads simply "Compliments of The American Sports Publishing Co." Also accompanied by two typed letters, on White House stationery, one dated June 9, 1903, the other April 18, 1904, both to Chadwick, by the Secretary to the President of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt, expressing thanks for the gift of Base Ball Guides. Apparently it was an annual tradition for Chadwick to present "a specially bound copy" of the annual Spalding Guide to the President of the United States, and these two letters acknowledge this gift for the years 1903 and 1904. Although TR was not a big baseball fan, he was an admirer of Chadwick's career and even wrote a letter of congratulations to Chadwick on the anniversary of his 50th year in journalism. Chadwick was friends with TR's children, who were baseball fans, and the 1904 White House letter included in this lot specifically communicates "the thanks of Masters Ted and Kermit," TR's sons. The Spalding Guide is in Excellent condition, with just a little natural wear to the spine and corners from handling. The interior pages are Ex-Mt, bright and clean throughout, including the backpage with Chadwick's signature and address. The White House letters are in Excellent condition with natural mailing folds. Also accompanied by a Henry Chadwick business card ("Editor Spalding's Official Base Ball Guide") in Very Good condition (4 x 2.25 inches). LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Total 5 items. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $5,750.00
