1839 Boy's Book of Sports

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,840.00

Extremely historically significant 1839 edition of The Boy's Book of Sports, published by S. Babcock, New Haven. 24 pages. This small (4 x 4.5 inches) soft-cover book presents rules by which to play various children's outdoor sports. It is one of the earliest published works to feature an illustration of youngsters playing baseball, and also one of the earliest to provide rules, and refer to the game by name as "base ball." The rules today are certainly a little different than as described in this 1839 volume, but the similarities are nothing less than remarkable. Of special note is the language used, such as references to "innings," and the layout of the baseball "diamond" ("Four stones for as to form the four points of a diamond"). In addition to its extraordinarily significant content, the fact that this book dates from 1839, the very year in which Abner Doubleday allegedly invented the game of baseball (according to Al Spalding and the Mills Commission), gives this book an added dimension of historical significance. This is a rarely offered museum-quality relic worthy of the most advanced nineteenth-century or general collection. Very strong condition for such an early published item. Minor professional restoration to the extreme bottom left corner of the cover is mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy; the flyleaf page has neatly written period inscription ("Morris Dorr, from uncle Pand, Aug 29th, 1841"). Excellent condition. Beautifully presented in a custom-made leather clamshell box with gold identification stamping on spine. Reserve $300. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,840.00
