1911 M116 Sporting Life Blue Background Complete Set

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $13,800.00

Complete high-grade set of all 24 1911 Sporting Life Blue Background cards, all graded by PSA. M116 Sporting Life cards were issued in subsets of 24 cards per series. The most distinctive (actually the only distinctive) 24-card subset of this classic issue is also the series which includes most of the greatest stars of the set. The prized Blue Background series is by far the most desirable M116 series of 24 cards. These 24 cards were actually issued with both blue backgrounds and white backgrounds. The blue background cards have always been especially appreciated by collectors for their scarcity and distinctive style, as well as for the unparalleled concentration of quality players included (Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, etc.) Being the first 24 cards issued, it is obvious that Sporting Life wanted to introduce the M116 set with a series including many of the greatest stars of the day. All 24 chosen were very prominent players. Included are 11 Hall of Famers. All 24 cards have been graded by PSA as follows: Bender NM 7, Bresnahan NM 7, Brown NM-MT 8, Chance NM 7, Chase NM 7, Cobb EX-MT 6, Collins NM 7, Crawford EX-MT 6, Davis VG-EX 4, Donovan EX 5, Dooin EX-MT 6, Doyle NM 7, Gibson EX-MT 6, Jennings EX-MT 6, Jones VG-EX 4, Jordan NM-MT 8, Lajoie NM 7, Leach NM 7, Lord EX 5, Mathewson EX-MT 6, McQuillan NM 7, Tenney NM-MT 8 (OC), Thomas EX 5, and Wagner NM 7. M116 Sporting Life are one of the most significant and highly collectible issues of the 1910 era. Though traditionally valued similarly to tobacco cards of the era, they are considerably scarcer than their tobacco card counterparts (such as T205 and T206). Many feel they represent one of the most outstanding values of all early cards, especially with reference to stars. The distinctive style of the set, and inclusion of so many major stars, makes this series of great interest not just to M116 set collectors, but to collectors who are not interested in tackling the entire set, but have interest in a representation of the M116 set. This is one of the very few complete blue backgrounds sets we have ever handled. It is a spectacularly fresh and clean collection which has obviously survived together as a unit from the day of its original issue. SMR value exceeds $13,000. Total 24 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000. SOLD FOR $13,800.00
