1910 E125 American Caramel Die-Cut Eddie Plank

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $8,050.00

Eddie Plank will always be a magical name in the world of baseball cards because of the legendary rarity of his card in the T206 set. There are approximately 100 T206 Planks known to exist. Offered is a card of Eddie Plank, from the American Caramel Die-Cut series issued in 1910, which is approximately 100 times rarer than the T206 Plank. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only E125 of Eddie Plank known to exist. Its existence has always been suggested by the E125 A's checklist, which appears on the reverse of all E125 Philadelphia Athletics players, but no example of Eddie Plank has ever surfaced as far as we know, until now. Plank was listed as not-yet-known to exist in Lew Lipset's The Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards Volume 2 Early Gum and Candy Cards, when published in 1984. (Editor's Note: we highly recommend this series as an extremely valuable reference for all serious card collectors.) This is the first time that this card has ever been illustrated in print. There is no way to know whether someday other examples will surface, but for now, and maybe forever, this is the only E125 Plank known to exist. The fragile nature of all die-cut cards and the easily broken flaps at the base of E125s which allow them to stand, make complete, high-grade examples all the rarer. The E125 Eddie Plank has survived complete, with all flaps intact, with stand-up flaps never even having been folded back. Bright and clean, both front and back, the card presents at a glance as Ex-Mt, though very close examination at the proper angle reveals a couple of very faint surface creases, so light they are not detectable from the reverse. A stunning specimen as simply a high-grade E125 sample, and an extraordinary example as the hobby's only known E125 American Caramel Die Cut of Hall of Famer Eddie Plank. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $8,050.00
