1940 Brooklyn Dodgers Black Bat

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $460.00

Hillerich & Bradsby commemorative bat, engraved "Brooklyn Dodgers - 1940" in green block letters on the barrel, surrounded by 25 player names engraved in gold block letters or facsimile signatures, including those of Durocher, Dressen, Medwick, "Hal" Reese (Pee Wee's rookie year), and Lavagetto. Traditionally black bats were produced by H&B only for Championship clubs as keepsakes for presentation to players, friends of the club, and dignitaries. This tradition began in the mid 1930s and continues to this day. 1940 is a particularly early and rare year for a black bat. Of special note is the fact that Brooklyn did not win the pennant in 1940, coming in a distant second place to the Reds. The bat does not identify the Dodgers as Champions, suggesting that this particularly issue was probably produced by special request of the Dodgers. The barrel stampings are crisp and bold. The bat grades EX-MT overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $460.00
