1920s Walter Johnson Pinback with Papier-Mache Baseball

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,035.00

Classic circa 1925 celluloid pinback of Walter Johnson has always been a well-documented rarity, and a favorite with advanced baseball celluloid collectors. The pin is in Mint condition, with the original backpaper on reverse (advertising "James Spencer & Co. Ribbons and Badges of Phila") complete and intact. This particular example is attached to an American flag-style hanging ribbon, which in turn is attached to a papier- mache candy container designed in the shape of a baseball, which has been glued together so that the two halves trap part of the ribbon, and do not allow the hollow ball to open without breaking the glue seal. Looking at this, one might conclude that the pin was issued with the papier-mache ball, which almost certainly once contained candy. This may be the case, but it is also possible that a collector has simply assembled these elements after the fact, for display purposes. There is no way for us to know. But the pinback stands on its own, and looks great displayed with the ribbon, attached to the circa 1920s baseball candy container (Ex-Mt), which is designed with printed red stitching, and the baseball brand name "Standard League Baseball." Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,035.00
