1935 Bismarck North Dakota Integrated Championship Team With Satchel Paige

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,035.00

Incredible real photo postcard (5 ½ x 3 ½ inches) featuring the National Semi-Pro Champions of 1935. This semi-pro team had no problem with fielding an integrated team. Bismarck signed Negro League "ringers" Satchel Paige, Hilton Smith, Double Duty Radcliffe, Red Haley, Barney Morris, and Quincy Trouppe and the team went undefeated for the entire 1935 season, winning the first Semi-Pro National Baseball Congress Championship at Wichita, Kansas. This is an extraordinary postcard, with flawless contrast and photo quality, featuring the greatest pre-1947 integrated team to ever take the field. Despite the integration of this team, and the implied progressive spirit of Bismarck, the black players, including Satchel Paige and his new bride, spent their nights sleeping in unheated rail cars at the edge of town. They were not welcome to sleep in Bismarck. Traditional postcard reverse. This is the first and only example of this significant rarity we have ever seen. Very clean reverse, never mailed. A couple light creases in the upper right corner, light corner wear, overall Vg-Ex condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,035.00
