1932 Pittsburgh Crawfords Team Photograph

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,300.00

Original photograph (9 ½ x 7 ½ inches) captures the 1932 Pittsburgh Crawfords in a classic team pose, in the second year of existence of the franchise. The Crawfords were one of the top four teams in Negro League history, along with the Homestead Grays, the Chicago American Giants, and the Kansas City Monarchs. Playing as an independent team in 1932, the Pittsburgh Crawfords are credited with a record of 99-36, and claimed an unofficial championship that year. Gus Greenlee, back row left, was the Crawfords owner. He was the top numbers racketeer in Pittsburgh, and in 1932 began the process of raiding the Grays roster, signing both Josh Gibson and Oscar Charleston. He later also signed Jud Wilson and Judy Johnson among others, literally taking the heart of the Gray's team to form this team. In this photograph, a young Satchel Paige stands next to Josh Gibson. Photo by Harrison of Hot Springs Ark (credit appears in lower right). White lettering at base reads "Crawfords of 1932," along with the date "3-18-32". This extraordinary photo is from the estate of Pittsburgh Crawfords outfielder Jimmy Crutchfield. It is very likely that each player on the team was presented with a copy of this display photo as a keepsake, though to the best of our knowledge this is the only example known. This is the very photograph which is pictured in Phil Dixon's book, the Illustrated History of the Negro Leagues (Amereon Publishing, 1992). Superb photo quality, technically in Very Good condition, with Excellent appearance. A vertical crease is barely visible from the front but can be seen from reverse, a few minor creases visible upon close inspection are mentioned for the sake of accuracy, the notation "Streeter" is neatly written in pencil on pitcher Sam Streeter's image. An outstanding and extremely rare team museum-quality presentation photograph of the 1932 Pittsburgh Crawfords, one of the greatest teams of all time, including Paige, Gibson and Charleston. Player identifications are written on reverse. Beautifully framed with double-sided glass to allow for viewing of reverse identifications, to dimensions of 16 x 14 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,300.00
