1931 Homestead Grays Real Photo Team Postcard Including Josh Gibson (Rookie)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,587.50

Real photo postcard of the 1931 Homestead Grays. White lettering at base reads "Homestead Grays of 1931," along with the date "4-3-31" and the additional caption "Colored Champions." The 1931 Homestead Grays are considered by most historians to be the best black baseball team of all time. Added to the already intimidating roster of the 1930 team was 18 year old catcher Josh Gibson, in his rookie season (top, fourth from right), as well as future Hall of Famer Jud Wilson (bottom, third from left). Photo by Harrison of Hot Springs Ark (credit appears in lower right). Billed as "Colored Champions," this title was unofficial as there was no official league world series between the years 1927 and 1942. Playing as an independent team in 1931, the Homestead Grays are credited with a record of 163-23 against all levels of competition. Josh Gibson is credited with hitting a record 75 home runs in 1931. The Grays joined the Negro National League in 1935, and won nine straight pennants from '37-'46. From the estate of Cum Posey. Traditional postcard reverse. The photo is a touch lighter than the 1930 Grays team postcard, but still a tremendous and perfectly clear image. Very light stain along top border may be from tape and is mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy. Player names are neatly written is script on the reverse, which also has a couple of insignificant small, light tape marks. This is one of the few known images of the 1931 Homestead Grays. An extraordinary real photo postcard of one of the Negro Leagues most legendary and celebrated teams. Vg-Ex due to minor flaws, with Excellent appearance. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,587.50
