1955 Topps Test Stamps Collection of 4

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $3,450.00

The 1955 Topps stamps are among the rarest and most mysterious of all Topps issues. Identical in design to the regular Topps issue, these stamps have gummed backs and perforated edges. It is virtually certain that these stamps never saw public distribution, and were produced for internal use only, as a test design concept. While most of the approximately 50 known examples are single stamps with one edge imperforated, this block presents four examples, each with all sides perforated. This unique sheet-of-four includes Jack Shepard, Bob Skinner, Bill Tremel, and Corky Valentine. All known examples from this unusual set, including these four, can be traced back directly to the collection of legendary hobby pioneer Woody Gelman, who was also the art director (and archivist) for Topps. Near Mint. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $3,450.00
